What Is Sleep Paralysis and why is it happening?

One of my friend once said that “Suddenly in the middle of the night he feels someone is riding on his chest and pressing his throat. He feels short of breath and helpless that he cannot remove this thing from his chest despite a millions of efforts.” Do you think it was a ghost? No, This is a medical term called sleep paralysis

Sleep paralysis usually occurs during one stage of sleep which is called REM stage of sleep, REM stage means rapid eye movement sleep it starts about 60 to 90 minute cycle that occurs after falling asleep. Sleep paralysis only lasts a few seconds or a few minutes at most, but is very painful and terrifying for the person who is  experiencing it.

My friend feels sleep paralysis because he was in REM sleep and is about to wake up or falls asleep again, or simply we say a switch from wakefulness to sleep. Between wakefulness to sleep most of people feeling sleep paralysis. In this condition, a person goes through different types of conditions, in which he/she feels pressure of a heavy object on the chest, breathing stops, voice stops and some unusual images appear in the mind. Under its influence, a person not only perceives unseen things, but sometimes even imagines himself as dead. Sometimes he feels himself falling from a height. These are all hallucinations.

Usually, this problem starts in between 10 years to 20. But people of any age can suffer from it if they can not follow health tips. According to doctors this may can be caused by some other diseases. including the following: Lack of sleep. Mental conditions such as depression or Bipolar disorder.

What is The Treatment for Sleep Paralysis?

Sleep paralysis is a temporary disorder, so there is no specific treatment to get rid of it. The good way to stop or avoid sleep paralysis is to understand it causes. So I suggest you always take care of your sleep and learn to manage your stress level and anxiety because it is only way for prevent sleep paralysis. On the other hand, if sleep paralysis is frequent and it become disabling on a daily basis (daytime fatigue), it is better to consult a doctor. Antidepressant treatment prescribed in the most severe forms.

To prevent this, avoid alcohol consumption, especially before going to bed and avoid caffeinated drinks. Also, eat three hours before going to bed. Eat a wholesome and balanced diet.

Sleep paralysis is a condition in which our body become temporarily disconnected from the mind and then our body feels paralyzed. This temporary and short interruption of the mind and body is sometimes frightening. Many people still think its symptoms are “ghosts” or demons, but scientists have proven that the cause of sleep paralysis is simply a lack of consciousness, a mental state during sleep.

Sleep paralysis usually occurs during sleep or when a person is about to wake up from sleep, when the person feels that the body is under great pressure.

In most cases, sleep paralysis is a sign that your body is going through sleep phases, doctors say. The stage which is called REM.

Rarely, sleep paralysis is linked to deeper underlying psychological problems. This condition mainly occurs in people between the ages of 10 and 25 and there is no specific treatment for this problem, it is treated by various medical specialists through drugs and therapies. Try to get 6 to 8 hours of sleep each day. Go to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time every morning.

Exercise regularly but do not exercise 4 hours before bedtime. Don’t eat heavy meals shortly before bed.
