The British company tried to prepare a nuclear reactor that would allow human habitation on the moon to become a reality. The British Space Agency awarded Rolls-Royce 2.9 million pounds for completing the project. According to the British Space Agency, funding has been released to develop a nuclear reactor after a £250,000 study was carried out last year, to build a lunar base for the habitation of humans. Scientists and engineers from Rolls-Royce are involved in a project that aims to test how nuclear energy could be used to build a permanent lunar base by building a microreactor that uses nuclear energy. Experts at the company expect that the microreactor will provide enough energy to power long-term human stays on the moon, as well as communication links and experiments on the surface.
Rolls-Royce has set a target of 2029 for producing microreactors to meet this target. Not just Oxford has been recruited for the project, but also the company has selected Bangor, Sheffield, and the University of Brighton. This project has been hailed as proof of the British power on the scientific front by the British Minister of Science, who expressed his opinion about this project at the time. According to the British Space Agency’s Chief Executive, Dr Paul Bett, Rolls-Royce’s achievements will provide the foundation for ensuring a permanent human presence on the moon.
