Police are Directed by the LHC to Resolve Imran’s Security Concerns

Lahore High Court has instructed the Superintendent (SP) of Security to resolve the security issue of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman, Imran Khan, in compliance with the law.

This directive was made during a hearing for Khan’s motion, in which he requested foolproof security and authorization to mark his presence in court proceedings via video link in order to prevent any incident after surviving an attempted murder in Wazirabad last year.

Justice Abid Aziz Sheikh advised the petitioner to ask the relevant court for permission to appear via video link during the hearing. Through Azhar Siddique, Imran’s solicitor, he had submitted a petition.

After a dispute arose between police high-ups and the PTI leadership regarding the issue, the court had previously ordered Siddique to go to Imran’s Zaman Park residence to determine whether enough security personnel had been deployed.

The PTI leadership insisted that no security personnel had been deployed at Zaman Park, contrary to the police’s assertion that sufficient security personnel had been stationed there. When they appeared in court, they stated that 123 police officers had been sent there.

Shah Mehmood Qureshi, the leader of the PTI, disagreed with the police’s account and claimed that there was insufficient police security at the scene.

During his court appearances, Imran expressed concern about being targeted due to his popularity in the political arena, which has become an issue for his political adversaries.

He asserted that his rivals, who have lost numerous criminal cases they have brought against him, now intend to completely remove him from the political scene.

Imran added that the current administration has falsely accused him and senior PTI members of serious crimes like sedition and mutiny ever since he was removed from office. He claimed that the entire state apparatus had been abused for political retaliation and settling scores.

PTI chose to protest the ruling Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) in response and declared a “haqeqi Azadi March.” Imran asserted that his political rivals, who are intimidated by his enormous popularity, ordered and carried out the assassination attempt.

Imran also sought strict action against respondents for failing to maintain law and order during his court proceedings.

In order to prevent any untoward incidents, he asked the court to grant him foolproof security and permission to mark his attendance in court proceedings via video link.

Imran appeared before the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC), banking court, judicial complex, and Lahore High Court (LHC) without any hesitation prior to the attempted assassination.

He was unable to physically attend some hearings, however, due to insufficient arrangements. Despite the aborted assassination attempt, he is still committed to fighting cases that are motivated by politics.

Finally, the petitioner requests appropriate security measures so that he can continue to fulfil his legal obligations without fear. The petition further demanded that until he is given sufficient security for court appearances, no negative action should be taken against him.
