The interim Chief Minister of Punjab, Syed Mohsin Naqvi, has stated that the interim administration is prepared to conduct elections as directed by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). According to him, he has only one mandate as caretaker, which is to conduct free and fair elections in Punjab.
As he took on his new role, Naqvi acknowledged that several areas needed improvement, but given the limited time available, he and his team will strive to make a positive contribution before the end of his term.
Despite being asked about his political affiliations, Naqvi maintained that he is impartial and does not belong to any political party. He also declined to respond to any criticism against him, stating that his focus is to conduct elections and oversee the day-to-day affairs of the government during the interim period. All transfers and postings in the province are being carried out as instructed by the ECP.
In response to a question regarding the statement made by Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah that PTI leaders and workers would be arrested, Naqvi stated that he had no intention of arresting anyone. However, if anyone violates the law and order, the law will take its course without discrimination. He emphasized that he does not wish to be involved in any controversy.
Moreover, he discussed the security threats in the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) daily public gatherings outside former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s residence, stating that he preferred to remain neutral and not interfere in their political affairs. The interim cabinet will decide how to handle the upcoming “Jail Bharo” movement.
As for the Ramadan package, Naqvi stated that the government is working to provide maximum relief to its citizens during the holy month. Government plans to provide a large subsidy package to benefit the majority of the population.
Naqvi stated that he would do his utmost to ensure justice for the family of the victim following the unfortunate lynching incident in Nankana Sahib. He also spoke about the shortage of medicines, which is a result of delays and restrictions in the import of raw materials. The interim government has approached the federal government to ease the situation.
Furthermore, Naqvi announced that the government has allocated Rs 575 billion to the wheat procurement project and is considering appointing upright civil servants to carry out the work. Additionally, the government is reviewing the wheat support price and will announce a favorable price in the near future.
