Imran Criticizes Government, Former Army Chief Over Rupee Crisis

Khan blames the former army chief and government for Pakistan’s financial woes as Rupee plunders to record lows.

Imran Khan, former Prime Minister and head of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has blamed former army chief General (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa and the current Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) government for Pakistan’s economic woes.

Imran claimed in a recent tweet that Pakistanis are suffering greatly as a result of the “regime change conspiracy,” which has caused the Pakistani rupee to depreciate by more than 62% (or 110/$) in just the first 11 months of the PDM government.

Imran also emphasised Pakistan’s historic 31.5% inflation rate, which ranks it as the 17th most expensive nation in the world and is the highest in 75 years. Due to the roughly 50% annual increase in consumer goods prices, he continued, this has resulted in a 14.3 trillion rupee increase in public debt.

A “bunch of criminals have been foisted upon the nation by ex COAS,” according to the former prime minister, which is why the rupee has depreciated and there is a high inflation rate..

The allegations Imran makes against General Bajwa are not original. He asserted in February that the former army chief planned to depose him with the aid of the US, along with their political rivals. When General Bajwa informed the Americans that Imran was anti-American, they fired him, Imran said, retracting his earlier claims against the US.

Imran had previously accused the US of orchestrating a “huge foreign conspiracy against Pakistan” in order to remove him from office. But in a November interview with the Financial Times, Imran hinted at his desire to improve things with the US, saying that if re-elected, he no longer holds them responsible and wants a “dignified” relationship.

According to the interbank market, the Pakistani rupee dropped 8.29% (or Rs24.07) to Rs290.18 against the US dollar on Thursday. As a result of the escalating inflation rate and increasing public debt, Pakistani citizens are facing difficulties in their everyday lives.

The data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) paints a grim picture of the country’s economic situation, with hardly any consumable goods whose price has not shot up in recent months.

The common Pakistani seems to be suffering due to the current economic conditions, and Imran Khan’s accusations against General Bajwa and the PDM government are only adding fuel to the fire.
