Google Takes Down Popular Chinese Shopping App Pinduoduo from Play Store Due to Malware Presence

By removing it from the play store, Google has surged on the popular Chinese budget shopping app, Pinduoduo. This decision was taken after Google discovered the presence of malware in app versions. In Tuesday’s statement, Google confirmed due to malware presence.

A Google spokesperson stated that they had suspended the Play version of the app due to security concerns. Additionally, Google has implemented its scanner, Google Play Protect Feature. This protection feature aims to scan the already installed apps on android devices and protect the device from potentially malicious apps. This google play protection feature blocks the installation of any app categorized as malicious. Users who have downloaded malicious versions of the app on their devices are alerted and advised to uninstall the app.

Google Play informed Pinduoduo that its app had been temporarily suspended due to non-compliance with Google’s policy. The company spokesperson said they are communicating with Google for more information and have been informed that several other apps have also been suspended.

Pinduoduo is a popular e-commerce platform in China with almost 900 million users. Its unique group buying model enables users to save money by teaming up with friends to purchase items in bulk.

Building on its domestic success, Pinduoduo’s parent company PDD launched Temu, an online shopping platform in the US last year. Temu offers a variety of products, including home goods, apparel, and electronics. This app gona viral in the U.S., and a quick download was observed on both IoS and android devices.

According to Sensor Tower, since its release in September, Temu has 11 million monthly active users with 24 million time download on both IoS and Android devices. Interestingly, Google did not mention Temu regarding Pinduoduo’s suspension. As of now, Temu remains available to download on the Play Store.
