Khawaja Asif, Pakistan’s Defence Minister, recently declared that the country has already defaulted and that everyone is responsible for it, including the establishment, government, and politicians. Due to continued debt repayment obligations, this statement comes amid an economic crisis with decades-high inflation and critically low foreign exchange reserves.
When addressing a ceremony in Sialkot, Asif emphasized the importance of standing on one’s own two feet to become a stable country. According to him, Pakistan’s problems can be solved within its borders and not by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which is unable to offer any solutions.
Asif argued that everyone, including the establishment, the bureaucracy, and the politicians, are to blame for the current economic mess and criticised Pakistan for its disregard for the law and the constitution. He added that for the previous 32 years, he had seen politics fall into disrepute.
The Defence Minister also attributed the current wave of terrorism to the previous administration for bringing terrorists to Pakistan two and a half years ago. He commended the security organisations for their valiant efforts in defending the Karachi Police Office against the attackers.
Pakistan’s economy has gotten worse over the years, and the government is having a hard time repaying its debts. Inflation is at its highest level in decades, the country’s foreign exchange reserves are at critically low levels, and this has an impact on people’s daily lives.
The government must act right away to resurrect the economy and raise living standards for Pakistan’s citizens as the country continues to face economic difficulties. A positive step towards bringing about the country’s stability is the defense minister’s encouragement of independence and an emphasis on domestic issues. But it’s still unclear how the government will handle the economic crisis and whether they’ll be able to change things for the better.
