According to Qureshi, the PPP Should Clearly State Whether it is for or Against the Constitution

Pakistan’s constitutional crisis deepens as political parties debate support for constitution amidst supreme court deliberations on delayed polls in Punjab

Pakistan’s political crisis has escalated as the ruling coalition, led by the PML-N, has hinted that it may not accept the Supreme Court bench’s decision regarding provincial elections.

Shah Mehmood Qureshi, vice chairman of the PTI, has urged all political parties, particularly the PPP, to declare whether they support or intend to abrogate the Constitution.

Furthermore, he criticized the PPP for its silence on the subject and urged them to clarify their position on the matter.

Qureshi emphasised the need for political parties to clarify their positions and said that “silence is not an option” at a press conference held in Karachi.

He declared that the PPP should either stand with the Constitution or declare that they are abrogating it, accusing them of abandoning it. He also blasted the PPP for destroying Bhutto’s achievements.

Qureshi further charged that the PML-N was pressuring the Supreme Court and undermining the Constitution. As proof, he cited their most recent posts on social media and attempts to criticise the judges.

Additionally, he charged that the administration wanted the National Assembly’s opposition leader to support its agenda.

Qureshi mentioned a significant case that will be heard and said it would serve as a test for political parties. He added that the government has passed a new bill restricting the CJP’s authority in the assembly in an effort to postpone the elections.

He urged the legal profession to support the Constitution and play a part in the history of the nation.

The PML-N and PPP both took part in the process of submitting nomination papers, and the Election Commission of Pakistan has already acknowledged the Supreme Court’s ruling by releasing the election schedule.

The election papers were submitted, and Qureshi criticised PM Shehbaz, Zardari, and Bilawal for lacking the guts to oppose the government’s efforts to postpone the vote.

Qureshi stated that a constitutional amendment is required to overturn the Supreme Court’s authority, and President Dr. Arif Alvi has already started legal consultations.

He also expressed the hope that the speaker would receive a message from the high court allowing PTI members to attend the meeting.

The PTI Vice Chairman urged all political parties to make clear their stances on the Constitution and charged the administration with trying to postpone the elections and restrict the CJP’s authority. He has urged the legal profession to uphold the Constitution and contribute to the history of the nation.
