Pakistan Will Soon Have Hundreds Of Automated Weather Stations Installed

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has announced plans to build hundreds of automated weather stations (AWS) across the nation to improve weather forecasting accuracy.

In order to accurately anticipate the weather for at least 10 days, 300 AWS will be deployed around Pakistan, according to Chief Meteorologist PMD Karachi, Sardar Sarfaraz.

The World Bank will provide the project’s funding. It will take three years to finish. Numerous meteorological indicators, such as temperature, wind speed and direction, humidity, cloud cover, and visibility, will be recorded by the AWS.

In Karachi, there are currently five AWS deployed, one of which is at Jinnah International Airport. Sindh has 17 AWS deployed overall. 55 AWS will be installed in the province after the World Bank-funded project is finished.

Every tehsil will have its own AWS as part of the initiative. Solar energy will be used to power the AWS. The solar-powered AWS will communicate precise data with the least amount of human involvement.

Furthermore, the agriculture and irrigation department’s land would be used for the Sindh project. In contrast, the remaining provinces will deploy the AWS on public property.
