According to Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, local manufacturing facilities produced or assembled 19.7 million phone handsets during the first eleven months of 2022, from January to November, as opposed to 1.37 million commercially imported phone handsets (PTA).
In November 2022, local manufacturing facilities produced or assembled 1.56 million mobile phone handsets.
Local manufacturing facilities produced/assembled 24.66 million mobile phone handsets in 2021 as opposed to 13.05 million in 2020, a historic rise of 88 percent.
According to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority’s official figures, commercial imports of mobile phone handsets decreased to 10.26 million in 2021 from 24.51 million in 2020. (PTA).
11.5 million 2G and 8.2 million smartphone devices were among the 19.7 million mobile phones that were produced or built locally.
Additionally, according to PTA data, 45 percent of mobile devices on the Pakistani network are 2G and 55 percent are smartphones.
Nevertheless, Pakistan imported mobile phones worth $290.570 million during the first five months (July-November) of the current fiscal year 2022–23, registering a negative growth of 66.08 percent compared to $856.730 million during the same period last year. This was done despite an increase in local mobile phone production.
According to data from the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), mobile phone imports decreased 1.92 percent month over month (MoM) and were worth $64.520 million in November 2022 as opposed to $65.780 million in October 2022.
In November 2022, mobile phone imports decreased by 69.57 percent on a year-over-year (YoY) basis from $212.058 million in the corresponding month of the previous year. During the first five months of the fiscal year 2022–23, total telecom imports into the nation totaled $455.731 million, a decrease of 59.67% from the $1.130 billion imported during the same period of the previous fiscal year.
A favourable environment for mobile device manufacture has been developed in Pakistan thanks to the successful implementation of the Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) and supportive government policies, such as the mobile manufacturing policy.
