The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) was instructed by the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday to hold local government elections in the federal capital on December 31 as previously announced.
The ruling on the petitions filed by the PTI and Jamat-e-Islamic challenging the ECP decision to postpone the LG elections “for the time being” was made by IHC Justice Arbab Mohammad Tahir.
Due to the federal government’s decision to expand the number of union council members, the top election board postponed the polls in Islamabad earlier this week (UCs).
The IHC reserved its decision earlier in the day after hearing three days of testimony from the petitions, the ECP, and the federal governments.
The court has declared the ECP notification that postponed the local government elections invalid and ordered it to proceed as planned. Additionally, it has instructed the federal governments to help the ECP so that LG elections can be held on time.
