On Thursday, K-3, the third unit of the Karachi Nuclear Power Plant (KANUPP), which would generate 1,100MW of power, was officially opened by Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif
China provided support in finishing the project.
In his remarks, the PM described K-3 as a development in Pakistan’s relationship with its dependable ally China.
He thanked the scientists and workers from Pakistan and China whose efforts had made the project possible.
He said that the PAEC staff members who worked on the project will be called to the prime minister’s office for a public thank-you.
The PM stated that Pakistan needed alternate and less expensive energy sources, including as solar, wind, hydel, and nuclear, due to the $27 billion energy import bill.
He lamented the fact that power production in Pakistan was just 10,000MW despite the country being endowed with vast resources that might generate 60,000MW through hydropower.
He noted that the KANUP project was completed under the leadership of the then-prime minister Nawaz Sharif and thanked the Chinese government for its assistance in this matter.
The PM noted that the production of thousands of megawatts of electricity through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects had a significant impact on the nation’s energy needs.
Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General (DG) of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), stressed the significance of harnessing nuclear energy safely as Pakistan faced problems from climate change in a video message.
