In order to compete in the 2016 Rio Olympics, two sisters named Yusra and Sarah Mardini had to flee their war-torn home country of Syria. The upcoming Netflix movie The Swimmers is based on their true experience.

The sisters’ love of swimming unites them in any circumstance and motivates them to do anything to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

They helped rescue the lives of other refugees when they left the Syrian civil war in 2015.

On September 8, 2022, The Swimmers will have its Toronto Film Festival premiere. On November 23, 2022, The Swimmers will be available on Netflix.
