As the economy continues to deteriorate, the federal government has chosen to outsource the management of the airports in Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi in an effort to reduce costs and improve passenger services.
According to a news release from PM House, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif led a meeting on Friday to review issues relating to the aviation industry and made the decision to appoint operators of worldwide standing to administer airports in the three cities.
The prime minister instructed organisations to move on with outsourcing airports with a particular emphasis on openness. A special committee will work on this issue under the direction of the prime minister.
The committee would include authorities such as Minister of Aviation Khawaja Saad Rafiq, Minister of Planning Ahsan Iqbal, Minister of Law and Justice Azam Nazir Tarar, and others.
It also stated that the operators will assist in managing the main airports for about 25 years. The Jinnah International Airports in Karachi and Islamabad will first be outsourced under a public-private partnership.
PM also discussed the addition of additional planes to the national airline's fleet.
