Imran Khan, the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), had his bail extended by a federal district and sessions court on Friday until February 27 on the basis of his health. The case was brought about because Khan staged a protest outside the office of the electoral body following the Toshakhana case verdict.
Further Sessions While Babar Awan represented the PTI chairman, Judge Zafar Iqbal heard the case. The case’s complainant, PML-N politician Mohsin Shahnawaz Ranjha, was present at the hearing as well.
Mr. Awan filed a petition at the beginning of the hearing asking for his client’s exemption from having to physically attend in the case. The judge inquired, “You have written it will take Imran Khan 20 to 25 days to recover.” The PTI chief’s attorney said that a medical report was attached to the petition and that he had been prohibited from travelling by doctors until he recovered.
Imran Khan, according to Mr. Ranjha, used to talk about justice but never even took part in the case against him investigation. When he asked the court to send a team from PIMS Hospital to Lahore for the PTI leader’s medical examination, he made fun of Imran Khan by saying, “I don’t think the plaster on Imran Khan’s leg would be removed in the next six months.” He claimed Mr. Khan participated in all other activities but was hesitant to show up in court.
The judge turned down the PML-N leader’s request for the PTI chairman to undergo a medical examination after hearing the arguments. He extended Imran Khan’s bail till February 27 while exempting him from appearing in court and ordering him to provide a written response to the matter.
Asad Umar, the secretary-general of the PTI, and numerous party members were arrested last October for suspected acts of violence committed during the protests in Islamabad.
