During the COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, she spoke at a panel on “How to avert, minimise, and address Loss and Damage to infrastructure” and emphasised the inadequacy of early warning systems that protect infrastructure when the climate turns rogue, as it did in Pakistan during the 2022 floods. She claimed that, just as we are focused on using natural solutions for mitigation, it is apparent that Pakistan needs to give priority to adaptation.
The Minister stated that Pakistan is actively participating in all multilateral forums in an effort to find points of agreement that will support structural transformation within the global climate system. She claimed that Pakistan is actively reforesting the land by planting 3 billion trees in its north and south.
At the Pakistan Pavilion, Minister Rehman met with the delegation of US Senators led by Senator Ben Cardin. Manzoor Ahmed Kakar and Senator Mushahid Hussain were also there to greet the group. During the meeting, Senator Cardin offered the Minister his sympathies and support in light of the tragic loss of life and destruction brought on by the recent floods.
The Minister also spoke with Save the Children International’s CEO, Inger Ashing, about the plight of children and their increased susceptibility to poor nutrition, medical treatment, and disrupted schooling following the flood.
Speaking at the event, Inger Ashing stated that Save the Children will help the flood-affected children with rehabilitation and will work to get education back on track.
