PM orders crackdown on the sugar cartel

Shehbaz Sharif, the prime minister of Pakistan, has given the go-ahead for a significant crackdown on sugar smugglers, hoarders, and profiteers.

Sharif voiced his displeasure with rumours of profiteering and smuggling at a high-level meeting held in the provincial capital of Punjab.

In response, he commanded strict action against those responsible and gave the go-ahead for harsh punishment.

Mohsin Naqvi, the acting chief minister of Punjab, was given specific instructions by Sharif on how to monitor and manage the province’s sugar prices.

Additionally, he gave the caretaker administration instructions to develop a system for selling sugar seized from smugglers and hoarders to the general public at a set price.

The premier urged Naqvi to consult with the owners of sugar mills in order to develop a shared plan to lower prices in order to address the issue of rising sugar prices.

Actions were taken at a prior meeting in Islamabad to lower the cost of sugar in Punjab to Rs 92 per kilogramme.

Sharif charged the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) with purposefully halting development projects started by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) between 2013 and 2018 during a separate meeting in Lahore.

According to Sharif, the PTI administration in Punjab stopped ongoing projects rather than starting new ones.

Sharif added that the Punjabi people had been “punished” for their support of the PML-N. Participants in the meeting received an update on the Imamia colony flyover project in Lahore as well as the proposed Lahore-Sialkot motorway link road, which would benefit the residents of Gujranwala.

The premier tasked the acting chief minister with assembling a three-person committee to present a thorough overview of the motorway link road project at the following meeting.

To assess the progress being made, he also went to the CBD underpass and the Lahore bridge that was still under construction.

Sharif instructed authorities to take legal action against the individuals responsible for the delay after expressing his displeasure with the pace of work at the Lahore bridge construction site.

Similar to how he characterised the delay during his visit to the CBD underpass, Sharif questioned the use of a third party for validation. He instructed officials to name a reputable third party to oversee the project’s transparency.

Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan’s prime minister, has authorised a crackdown on sugar smugglers, hoarders, and profiteers and instructed officials to take strict action against them.

Additionally, he gave the Punjab caretaker government an order to keep an eye on and regulate sugar prices as well as create a system for supplying confiscated sugar at a set price.

Sharif has also commanded officials to pursue legal action against those who are delaying ongoing development projects and to ensure project validation is transparent.
