Constitutional crisis can only be resolved by the full court: Bilawal

Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari urges Supreme Court to remove judges and form full court on election postponement, as PPP demands resolution to constitutional crisis.

In order to resolve the constitutional crisis the nation is currently experiencing, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari demanded the creation of a full court and the removal of “two judges” from the bench in the case of the postponement of the Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa elections.

Speaking to a crowd in Larkana to mark the 44th anniversary of former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s martyrdom, Bhutto-Zardari made this declaration.

After hearing arguments, the three-member bench of the Supreme Court, which is led by Chief Justice of Pakistan Umar Ata Bandial and consists of Justices Ijazul Ahsan and Munib Akhtar, revoked the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) earlier today decision to postpone elections in Punjab.

petition filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) opposing the ECP’s decision to push back the Punjab Assembly elections until October.

The Punjab Assembly general elections will take place on May 14 after the top court declared the ECP’s decision to be “unconstitutional.”

Without naming any judges, Bilawal demanded that the two judges “who were caught talking to the opposition on the phone” be removed from their positions.

He continued by saying that if the issue involving early elections in the two assemblies is resolved by a full court, the PPP is ready to contest the elections at any time.

The PPP leader emphasised that the people, not judges, should decide a leader’s fate and the direction of the nation.

According to Bilawal, the Supreme Court’s decision on Article 63-A, which deals with the defection clause, caused the judiciary to remove the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) from the throne of Lahore and hand it over to Parvaiz Elahi, which sparked the nation’s ongoing political crisis.

He also questioned Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial’s decision not to convene the full court in the polls delay case, claiming that doing so could prevent a constitutional crisis and save the nation.

In order to bring stability to the nation, Bilawal pleaded with the supreme court to restore the standing of the judiciary and democracy.

He forewarned that the battle for the throne of Lahore would have an impact on the entire nation and the federation and could have dire consequences for the nation and its citizens.
