After the home team scored their highest-ever ODI total, the second one-day international between Bangladesh and Ireland was postponed due to rain in Sylhet on Monday.
As the hosts scored 349-6 thanks to Mushfiqur Rahim’s century, the quickest ODI century by a Bangladeshi batsman, Ireland was unable to begin their innings due to rain.
The game was abandoned by referees shortly after 8:30 p.m. (2030 GMT) because there was no chance of the weather in Sylhet International Cricket Stadium becoming better.
Bangladesh is leading the series 1-0 with one game left on Thursday after defeating England 3-0 in the T20s.
Mushfiqur reached 100 undefeated off just 60 balls, and Liton Das and Najmul Hossain contributed 73 and 70 runs, respectively.
This enabled the hosts to surpass their previous mark of 338-8, which was established in only the previous game—one that they won by 183 runs.
Bangladesh was given the opportunity to bat first and started off cautiously in the somewhat cloudy circumstances before Liton and captain Tamim Iqbal gained confidence and put up 42 runs.
Mark Adair’s straight toss to outrun Tamim for 23, followed by 101 runs for the second wicket from Liton and Najmul.
Following Curtis Campher’s dismissal of Liton, Graham Hume, Ireland’s most productive bowler (3-58), dismissed Shakib Al Hasan (17) and Najmul in back-to-back overs.
Nevertheless, Mushfiqur and Towhid Hridoy then dominated the bowling, putting 128 runs for the fifth wicket in just 13 overs.
Towhid was out for 49 runs when he was bowled, but Mushfiqur kept up his excellent batting, reaching his eleventh ODI hundred with a single on the final ball of the innings.
In 2009, he defeated Zimbabwe with a 63-ball century, shattering Shakib’s previous mark.
In addition, Mushfiqur joined teammates Tamim and Shakib as the third Bangladeshi to surpass 7,000 ODI runs.
Ireland may utilise this experience to prepare for the ODI World Cup in India later this year, for which they have not yet qualified.
