OneWeb, a London-based internet-providing company, launched another 40 spacecraft, bringing their in-orbit broadband constellation to an impressive total of over 580. With just one more launch scheduled in the coming weeks, OneWeb is on track to have enough satellites in orbit to deliver high-speed internet to any corner of the globe.
Neil Masterson told to news reporters,
“We issued our first invoice last May, which is a very important moment for us. And as of the end of December, we’ve got $800m in backlog bookings. So we’re cracking on, and we’re excited to be expanding around the rest of the world, really showing what this network system can do,”
A True Story of Resilience; OneWeb
It’s been a remarkable turnaround for the company, which suffered a financial collapse at the beginning of the Covid pandemic in March 2020. Fortunately, the UK government and Indian conglomerate Bharti stepped in. They bought the company out of bankruptcy just a few months later, at a time when they had fewer than 80 spacecraft in operation.
Since then, OneWeb’s CEO, Neil Masterson, has overseen an impressive scale-up of the operation, with customers now being served in 15 different countries above 50 degrees in latitude, including the UK. This is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the team at OneWeb, who have worked tirelessly to make this ambitious project a reality.
The company is truly making its motto in happening,
