Police in Pakistan’s cultural centre have declared that they will begin conducting breathalyser checks to deter drunk drivers.
To catch drunk drivers, the traffic police have established specific checkpoints at several sites throughout the city and begun employing breathalysers.
In a recent interview with the media, Dr. Assad Malhi, Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) of Lahore, said that the latest initiative was inspired by incidents in which drunk drivers lost control and caused serious accidents.
The top traffic cop in the second-largest city in the nation issued a warning that drunk drivers could face legal consequences under the Motor Vehicle Ordinance. Along with the fine, offenders will risk a jail sentence of up to six months, the CTO added.
The new programme was also announced by the Lahore Traffic Police on its official Twitter account, which also urged people not to drive drunk.
As thousands of individuals are murdered in fatal accidents each year, drunk driving is thought to be a major cause of death.
