Police officers and supporters of Haq Do Tehreek leader Maulana Hidayatur Rehman battled in the port city on Balochistan’s southwest coast, resulting in one police officer’s martyrdom and injuries to others.
The unwelcome event took place in Gwadar at the Syed Hashmi Chowk when the Maulana Hidayatur Rehman-led Gwadar Rights Movement (GRM) was protesting in the port city.
Local media said that protesters were calling for the release of their leaders who had been arrested by police. A police officer was critically hurt when unidentified persons shot at police officers during the tense scenario.
The officer, identified as Yasir, was taken to the GDA Hospital but died there from his injuries. The registration of a FIR against Maulana Hidayat-ur-Rehman, who has been fighting the development of the port city, was ordered by officials.
The police constable’s remains would be transported to Dera Murad Jamali in the interim for final rites.
Citizens of Gwadar and members of civil society denounced the HDT leaders’ provocations.
Ziaullah Langove, the home minister for Balochistan, has taken note of the occurrence and ordered the police to file a report against those responsible.
