On Thursday, the Islamabad High Court affirmed the report of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in the prohibited funding case against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Imran Khan’s petition was dismissed by the court after the ECP issued a show cause notice to the party.
Khan’s challenge to the ECP order was heard by a three-judge bench consisting of Chief Justice Aamer Farooq, Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb and Justice Babar Sattar last month. In his petition, the former premier argued that the ECP unfairly declared his party as foreign-aided and rejected his declaration because political parties’ accounts are handled by chartered accountants.
However, the IHC Chief Justice stated that the electoral watchdog’s decision was an ‘observation’ and that the decision would be revised if the PTI could prove that the funds were not prohibited. As a result of the court’s verdict, the PTI’s challenge has been dismissed and the ECP has been given the authority to regulate political funding in the country.
As a result, the Islamabad High Court ruled in favor of the Election Commission of Pakistan, recognizing the validity of its report on the prohibited funding case against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. The ruling strengthens the ECP’s role in monitoring and regulating political funding in the country.
